Paraguay

Paraguay

Paraguay
Capital: Asuncion
Asuncion is also the largest city with about 680,250 people.
Share borders with Bolivia, Brazil, and Argentina.
Population of about 6 million people.

02 DEC 2012- A peasant land reform activist is assassinated in Paraguay by two gunmen. One fired a shotgun, the other fired a .38 revolver.

The U.S. sent military aid in 2005 in the form of U.S. Special Forces adivisors.

Dr. Luis Maria Argana International Airport in the town of Mariscal Estigarriba is strategically located between Brazil and Argentina. A large airport built in a small town in the 1980's by U.S. Technicians hired by the dictator of Paraguay at the time, Alfredo Stroessner. The airstrip is larger than the one in the capital, Asuncion. The population of the town is only about 2,000. When U.S. soldiers arrived in 2005, they landed at the Dr. Luis Maria Argana International Airport.

Apparently, the objective of the U.S. sending military advisors to train the military and police forces of Paraguay, was to help the government suppress a growing movement of landless farmers called the Paraguayan Campesino Movement.

Silvio Pettirosi International Airport (SGAS) in Asuncion.

About 10,650 active duty military personnel.
164,500 reserve?
14,800 paramilitary
Much military weapons and equipment has been donated throughout the years by Brazil and Argentina.
Paraguay fought in the War of the Triple Alliance against Brazil, Argentina and Uruguay from 1864-1870. Paraguay lost a sizable portion of its male population during the war.
