Brazil
Capital: Brasilia
Largest city: Sao Paulo
Other cities: Rio de Janeiro
From 1549-1793 the capital of Brazil
was a city named Salvador.
The capital was chaged to Rio de Jaeiro
from 1793-1960.
In 1808, the Portuguese monarchy fled
to Brazil after Napoleon invaded Portugal.
The King of Portugal returns in 1821.
His son stays in Portugal to rule.
Brazil declared independence from
Portugal on September 7th, 1822
The capital was again changed, after it
was decided that Rio de Jaeiro was too crowded and too close to the
coastline. The builders wanted to build a more modern looking city
further inland, in case of the threat of invasion, so the new capital
of Brasilia was built. Brasilia has been the capital of Brazil since
1960.
Brazil uses nuclear power plants.
Started a nuclear weapons program but
discontinued it after international pressure, mostly from the U.S.
Brazil has signed an agreement for the
procurement of 18 Pantsir-S1 air defense systems from Russia.

ReplyDeleteThanks.
DeleteAnsar - fantastic blog. Do you know any good sources for information on satellite / space programs for Government / Military in each of the countries you've covered? I'm doing a research report on the same and would appreciate any help here.
ReplyDeleteSorry for the late response, but no, I don't have any one source for all satellite and space program information. I often frequent the site: http://www.militar.org.ua/foro/fuerzas-armadas-de-latinoamerica.html which has a lot of information on the military forces of Latin American nations. It also has occasional information on satellites, space programs, new indigenous weapon programs, etc. Very informative, but its in Spanish. Any nation outside of Latin America involving space programs, etc. and I would have to dig a bit deeper. You can probably type in "Space program" or "satellite" in the language of the nation that you're studying and that nations name in a search engine. Say "Space program Russia" in Cyrillic for example. Good hunting.
