8 JAN 2010- Venezuelan F-16 fighter aircraft intercept a U.S P-3 Orion aircraft that entered Venezuelan airspace. Venezuela accuses the U.S. of repeatedly violating Venezuelan airspace along with the Dutch. The U.S. enter from Colombia and the Dutch Caribbean colonies, while the Dutch have reportedly entered from bases on Aruba and Curacao. The government of Venezuela accuses the U.S. and Netherlands of possibly planning to attack Venezuela from bases in Colombia and the Dutch colonies in the Caribbean.

July 2010- 3 separate incursions of Dutch aircraft into Venezuelan airspace are reported by Venezuela.

10 August 2012- A former U.S. marine is captured in Venzuela after sneaking into Venezuela from Colombia. The man also had a notebook containing geographical locations that he tried to destroy before being captured.

25 August 2012- A huge explosion at Venezuelas main oil refinery kills 41 people, 18 of whom belong to the Venezuelan National Guard. Two refinery tanks were destroyed. Venezuelan forces were put on alert after the former U.S. marine was captured. The explosion was blamed on a gas leak, but the cause of the gas leak is still under investigation.

05 MAR 2013- Beloved Venezuelan leader Hugo Chavez dies after a long struggle with cancer.

2013- Venezuela is building three military bases along the border with Colombia to help defend against armed groups, drug cartels, and U.S. agents infiltrating from Colombia.
